Paeoniflorin is the main active component extracted from the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora. It is a water-soluble monoterpene glycoside with molecular formula C₂₃H₂₈O₁₁, melting point ~196°C. It is readily soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol.

Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that paeoniflorin exhibits excellent skin‑whitening, antioxidant, and anti‑inflammatory properties. In vitro studies show that paeoniflorin inhibits tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis in UVB‑induced B16F10 cells, reducing pigmentation at the source. In vivo animal studies confirm that paeoniflorin significantly reduces epidermal and dermal thickness, and decreases melanin granules, melanin content, and tyrosinase activity in skin tissue.
In addition, paeoniflorin inhibits elastase activity, scavenges free radicals, and enhances skin moisture retention, demonstrating anti‑aging and skin‑conditioning functions.
